A lovely antique picture frame, of excellent quality & construction. With lots of elaborate border motifs & it's a good wide border. With some amazing highly-convoluted detail, of cross-hatching, cartouche sections with fabulous foliate motifs/trails all along the wide frieze, the gilding I take to be the original. (to fit a picture) of. Dating at a guess to around 1900 this is a superb antique gilt picture frame with a fabulous wide frieze, uber-opulent with. A variety of highly-ornate detail to the border, all sorts of elegant strapwork is here, with many classic ornamental features & designs, elegant. Arabesque scrolls mixed in with foliate flower-heads, trails & garlands. & we have a classic lamb's tongue pattern to the sight edge.

The gilt tones here are amazing and the gilt extends to the rear sides of the frame, I believe it to be an oak carcass as you can see the oak grain coming through here, I think that this type of moulded border was actually bought in lengths & this is the reason that the corner patterns never quite match up it's a very good example of this type of frame & as mentioned, I think the gilding is original but I can't 100% be sure, but it's a fabulous gold colour & there is lots of light & dark contrast, the whole mount has a real air of sophistication I could see several quality artworks working very well in this frame... This fabulous frame will suit a special painting or perhaps a portrait of a loved one, it would certainly grace the wall of any gallery & would also make an amazing mirror...

Condition In Very good condition, one bit of a bash to one side of the frieze (see photo 11) measuring roughly 1 & 1/4 in length but because there is so much dark & light contrast in the gesso it makes this quite hard to see, it blends in & as with all age-commensurate wear & tear in an old mount, it is all part & parcel of owning an antique & naturally one or two gesso cracks to the border as well as the odd light ding here & there, but in truth, nothing particularly noteworthy.
